CM-02: Communications Programs and Utils. -------------------------- #033 Communications, Other Small Programs Disk -------------------------- 2496 $0 tells you how to upgrade/change your 2400 baud modem into a 9600 baud modem. A parts list and basic diagrams are included. (Note: PsL has not tested this upgrade.) Access is a pair of text files that give details on how the best way to tie into U.S. telecom services (eg: CIS) from the U.K. and Australia. If you are going to one of those places and want to stay in touch, you should definitely read these files. CommHex Michael Burton Software ASP $? is a diagnostic program that displays information received by a serial port in two windows. One window shows data received by the serial port in ASCII, and the other window shows the same data in hexadecimal. Compuserve User ID Finder 1.0 (ID'S) Sax, Mike $5 will scan your log file and create or update a list of all user ID's it can find. Dial_Hayes 1.3 (DIALHYS) Repici, John $5 is a stand-alone modem dialer. Despite the name, non-Hayes modems are supported. While the program could be used for dialing phone numbers for talking, it is designed primarily for making connection with other computers without using a regular comm program and has several features to optimize the program for that purpose. DirCopy 3.5 Ellis, Mark $5 will let you export a telecom program's dialing directory into a plain ASCII file for easy editing and then import it back into your program. This is also an easy way to import BBS lists or other files of telecom phone numbers. Ease-Up 1.7 Simple Solutions, Inc. $0 is a front end to the script languages of several popular communication programs. Ease-Up is specifically designed for generating upload scripts that will automatically upload files, as well as descriptions. Groupkey 1.0 (GROUPKY) Sawada, Dr. Masaaki $10 is a special macro key program to speed up the rate at which you type text on BBS, where time literally translates to money. This program lets you pre-write lines of text with your editor or word processor and then send it at the stroke of the plus "+" key on the numeric keypad. Type the plus key again, and the next line is sent and so on. No-Noise (Modem Noise Killer) With this circuit diagram, some basic tools including a soldering iron, and four or five components from Radio Shack, you should be able to cut the noise and garbage that appears on your computer's screen when you use your modem. This is very easy to build, however conditions may be different due to modem type, amount of line noise, old or new switching equipment (Bell's equipment), and on and on. So it may not work as well for you in every case. (NO-NOISE is on disk 0270.) PaletteP (PALETEP) Smith, Dave $0 is a small TSR that will restore the Prodigy color palette on EGA monitors. PWM Expert Edge, Inc. $15 lets you create and keep track of passwords. For example, if you have a CompuServe account and a Bix account and maybe you use a DOS menu program that requires a password or a file encryption program that requires a key word, you can keep track of all of them in this program. PWM will let you make up passwords or it will make them up for you. It displays the service the password is for, the current password and the prior password. Set2400 is a utility that displays the switch settings on your Hayes 2400 baud modem and lets you changes those settings by software control. BASIC required. TWatch Cannon, Ray $0 serves as a lost carrier detecter for bbs's that do not otherwise handle carrier monitoring. This allows the system to reboot if a caller hangs up without logging off. ------------------------------- END OF SMALL PROGRAMS DISK #033 ------------------------------- --------------------- #2762 Comm., Other #2 Small Programs Disk --------------------- BBSMeter Bit Technology $5 is a 1.3k TSR which displays BBS charges in the upper left-hand corner of your screen. Required CGA, EGA, or VGA. Connect Time 1.5 (CT) Tuley, Richard $20 is a set of two programs to accurately track your time connected and money owed to computer information services. (res:41k) ModemBox displays the modem lights at the top of your screen for easy reference. (res:1k) PCPNum 1.0 Starling, Kenneth H. $5 searches its database and tells you if a specified area code and exchange can be accessed via PC Pursuit. PhLog2 lets you track your long distance usage (or local, for that matter) when using a communication program, such as Procomm or GT-Powercomm, that has scripting capability. StartBB Shifrin, Jerry $0 is a text file of information for anyone who is thinking of starting their own BBS. The information contained in the file is from an experienced SysOp. It includes the approximation of the cost, time and effort that will be required, as well as what you will receive in return from operating a bulletin board. TapOrder 1.2 (TAPORDR) GRIMS Associates $25 manages the message files created by TapCIS. Also included is TotSr 1.2. Time Logger 2.1 (TLOGGER) Stern, Michael W. $0 will record the time and cost of each on-line session with services like CompuServe. -------------------------------- END OF SMALL PROGRAMS DISK #2762 -------------------------------- ------------------------- #1674 Comm Programs/Utils Small Programs Disk ------------------------- Autocapt 1.0 (AUTOCAP) Yoshimura, Kazu $5 is a TSR which, for all practical purposes, downloads files in IBM3270 terminal emulation mode. What it really does is capture screens automatically one after another. It will also manually capture screens. It is primarily designed to run with an asynchronous terminal emulation software package which is used for accessing an IBM mainframe in 3270 full screen mode. (res:11k) ComCall 2.0 Jones, Clive $8 monitors your phone line in your absence and calls a specified phone number to alert you when a call makes the phone ring for a specified number of times. ComCall can also be set to execute a command, such as starting up communications software. A modem is required. DiskRefs For ProComm+ 1.0 (DRPCP) Zeak, Eugene A. Jr. $15 is a hypertext TSR electronic keyboard template for ProComm+. Features include a comprehensive glossary, on-line telecommunications primer, complete 1200/2400 baud Hayes command set, and key references for ProComm+ basic and advanced operations. Otto 1.5 [OTTO] (09-93 CD) RSE, Inc. ASP $30 lets you automate communications. It watches the screen for user-specified characters and then generates user-specified keystrokes. Although it comes set up for use with AutoSig on CIS, it could be used for just about anything. QuickTalk 1.0 (QTALK) SilverSoft, Inc. $80 is a pop-up communications program that allows you to receive/transmit ASCII files directly to/from an application such as WordPerfect. It allows you to create telephone books and dial telephone numbers from them. QuickTran (QT-AB) Burton, Adrian $20 compresses files as they are sent across phone lines. Ordinarily, with standard file transfer protocols like Xmodem, the computer spends a great deal of time merely waiting to send or receive data. QT puts this time to use compressing and decompressing data as it comes in or goes out. Note that both parties to the transfer must have QT. Quick Terminal A.1 (QTERM) Patridge, Ken $0 is a 9k pop-up communications program which can be used to communicate with any serial device (eg: modem or plotter) without exiting from the current applications program. Rated at up to 9,600 baud. SansInt Colby, Lauren A. $0 is a terminal program which allows you to run more than two com ports without interrupt conflicts. With this program, six or more serial ports can co-exist at 300 baud in one machine. The Minimal Communicator (TMC) Lindsey, Alan $35 is a small comm program written entirely in assembler. It was designed to be small enough to fit on a laptop RAM-disk. TMC is rather bare-bones and may not be suitable for beginners, but then it takes only 10k of disk space and should run in 128k of RAM. It is primarily of use in communicating, rather than downloading, since no transfer protocols are included. Limited script capabilities are present for automated log-on's. TMC came to us from the author in Switzerland, but he may be reached via CompuServe. TSRBoot 1.14s Horizons Consulting $27 is a TSR that will reboot your system at a specified time regardless of any other activities. This is mainly of use with unattended systems, such as for BBS's and networks. WhatLine 2.8 (WHATLIN) Advance Systems $20 manages multiple telephone devices (FAX, answering machine, BBS) that share the same line (with different phone numbers - where offered by the phone company). Most phone companies will let you have up to three different phone numbers ring on one line, each with a different ring pattern. WhatLine will execute a different program, depending on which number was dialed. If you have a FAX card, telephone voice mail/message card like the Watson, and a modem, WhatLine will execute the appropriate software for each. WhatLine can also be used to perform timed execution of programs. -------------------------------- END OF SMALL PROGRAMS DISK #1674 -------------------------------- ----------------------------- #12336 Comm Programs/Utils #2 Small Programs Disk ------------------------------ #12336 Remote Computer Operation -------------------------------- ElseWare 2.2 Kiley, Kevin $0 lets you run a computer from a different location. The programs consists of a small TSR that must be loaded on the remote machine and another on the local machine. Connection between the two machines is made via your favorite communications programs and then the TSR's take over. The refreshing thing about this program is that although the author makes a good case that his program is better than any of the similar retail products, he asks nothing for it. Instead, he says "It has served me well and I hope it will do the same for you." #12336 Fax: ---------- Fast Serial Ports (FASTSP) Spalter, Michael $0 contains information about high speed modems, and the problems associated with them and serial ports. It covers the problems, the cures and gives practical unbiased advice, as well as interesting background information. FAXCover 2.1 (FAXCOVR) Sullivan, Mike $0 prints a nice looking, personalized cover page for your FAX on an Epson printer. It allows up to 20-lines of notes on the page. Faxer 2.0 Simple Simon Software $0 sends a fax to a fax machine/board without CAS or any other interface. It should work on most Class 1 boards using Rockwell chips. FAX Manager 1.2 (FAX-MGR) Cox, Frank $20 prints FAX cover sheets, and maintains a database of the names and FAX numbers. It allows you to include a message of up to 20 lines on the cover page. #12336 Other: ------------ CISTime Swift-Ware $0 is a TSR that captures Compuserve's time display and sets your computer system clock to match. PortaCall 2.0 (PCALL) (09-93 CD) Dineen, Bill $10 calls you whenever a new message is on your answering machine. It lets you know there is a message, by dialing your phone, leaving a few rings and then hanging up. Requires a Hayes compatible, auto-dial modem. --------------------------------- END OF SMALL PROGRAMS DISK #12336 --------------------------------- ------------------------ #1673 External Protocols Small Programs Disk ------------------------ HotKeyZ 6.0 Albrecht, Mark $10 is a DSZ protocol interface utility. Its use of point-and-shoot windows are more efficient than other external file transfer interfaces such as script files and batch files. If you are not familiar with DSZ (Zmodem), see ZINTRO. JModem 1.21 Johnson, Richard B. $0 is a new file-transfer protocol developed to be used as an external protocol. It is designed to maximize data transfer speed by sending very long blocks of data and compressing data when possible. If you have a noisy telephone circuit, the longer blocks will result in aborted transfers more often than will XModem. A 16-bit CRC is used to verify accuracy. Assembler source code is included. Ozbext II 1.3b Sneed, Steve $0 is an external protocol module supporting the CompuServe B and B-Plus (often known as Quick-B) protocols for file transfer. While there are currently no applications on CIS that use the actual Transport Layer capability of BPlus, there are several planned. Meanwhile this program supports the existing protocol implementation as well as the enhanced version soon to be released. Most communications programs allow the use of external protocols such as this one and Ozbext is worth the effort in order to get the faster transfers. Powernode (POWERN) Pearson, J. L. $10 is designed to make it easier to use external protocols in almost any comm program. Zintro Findlay, Mark $0 is a short introduction to Zmodem file transfer protocol (DSZ). -------------------------------- END OF SMALL PROGRAMS DISK #1673 -------------------------------- ----------------------------- #1941 File Transfer Utilities Small Programs Disk ----------------------------- ACopy 4.22 $0 is a file transfer program for ISDN. ISDN is a digital phone system allowing 64 kbit/s of data transfer. Block-Calc 2.0 (BLOCKCA) calculates the number of blocks in a file to be sent over a modem. Blocks can be either 128 bytes or 1k. Also see TT below. Callwait.BAS purports to send commands to your Hayes-compatible modem to keep your download from getting zonked by your phone's "call-waiting" line noise. Comx 2.0 Biologic $36-$70 lets you quickly and easily transfer files between any two PCs, including the IBM PS/2 series, via the serial ports. Remote drives can be accessed by DOS commands or other software such as word processors or spreadsheet programs, variable transfer speed up to 115,200 baud, and uses only 4K of memory. Requires a null modem cable, which is an inexpensive cable or connector available from computer stores, serial port on each machine and DOS 3+. DeadMan Graham, Keith P. $? was written for a blind person who has trouble with being disconnected from a bbs due to not being able to respond rapidly enough while reading the screen with a braille reader, or whatever. Like the "Deadman" switch in a railroad engine, if the user doesn't press a key in a specified period of time, Deadman will send a specified series of keystrokes to the bbs to keep the connection open. We expected Deadman to repeat the keys every "n" seconds, but it didn't during testing unless we manually pressed a key. We were wondering how you could keep sending keystrokes to a bbs without causing problems. The answer to both of these problems is that after Deadman sends a key and sounds its alarm, you press backspace. This wipes out the key it sent and resets it to send another. FastHST 2.1 Sheppard, Joseph $0 is a program that configures USRobotics Courier HST modems to run with the port locked at top speed. HostKeys 1.0 (HOSTKEY) Logical Business Systems, Inc. $50 automates mainframe 3270 terminal sessions and file transfer. It works with all 3270 emulation products that support HLLAPI. Invisible Link (IL) Best, Robert and Wong, Garland $35 is designed to let you transfer files in the background while you run other programs. IL is written in assembly language for optimum size and speed, allowing background transfers without degradation of speed in the foreground program. Features include speeds up to 9600 baud, Xmodem protocol, Queue up to 10 files to transfer unattended with auto-hangup, queue up to five numbers to dial in the background, LapView 1.01 Advance Systems $35 is a file transfer and directory manager for two computers connected by the serial port using a standard null modem cable. A directory from each computer is displayed side by side and you select the files from these directory listings that you wish to transfer. You can copy, move, delete, view and print files; sort, switch, create and remove directories or run an EXE, COM, or batch file on either computer. (Not on this disk. Ask for disk #8873.) M100DUMP (M100DUM) Nuckolls, Bob $0 will transfer files from a Tandy TRS-80, Model 100/102 to a MS-DOS machine. This program will work with any laptop which has a telecommunications program that will output an ASCII text file to the laptop's serial port. The program requires no handshaking so the very simplest of data cables will work, connect ground to ground and a single lead connecting the transmitted data from the laptop to the receive data pin on the MS-Dos machine. PCPUR.TXT (PCPUR) is a collection of information files about PC Pursuit, a low fixed-cost system for accessing bulletin boards via long-distance lines. (Not on this disk. Ask for disk #8002.) Serial File Copy 3.4 (SFCOPY) MarshallSoft $25 allows fast copying of files between two computers via serial ports with a null-modem cable. SFC is particularly useful for transferring data between desktop and laptop machines which may have dissimilar drives. It can handle transfers up to 115200 baud. Wildcards can be used in specifying files to copy and entire directories can be copied with one command. You can load the DOS Shell from within the program, and print files on the remote computer. There is support for hard disk to hard disk backup. Both machines must be MS-DOS based computers. Supports COM1-COM4. TT displays xmodem transmission times for specified files on a disk. The default filespec is "*.*" and default baud rate is 1200. Other rates and filespecs may be specified. Also see BLOCKCAL above. XFER 1.2 MarshallSoft Computing, Inc. $18 transfers multiple files between PCs using serial ports. It features transfer speeds at up to 115200 baud and command line execution. ZIP 1.63 (08-93 CD) Meyer, Eric $30 is a tiny, fast utility to transfer files between two IBM compatible computers over an ordinary serial cable connection. This is most useful when the computers don't share a common disk format, as in the case of a desktop PC with 5" drives and a laptop (or PS/2) with only a 3" drive. It is easier to use, and over 6 times faster, than any ordinary telecom program. It is also DesqView aware and has comma/semicolon file delimiters. You can even clone ZIP if incompatible disk formats prevent you from getting ZIP.COM itself onto the second computer to begin with. Other features include support for 4800 and 2400 BPS rates, and operation at slow baud rates. This is an excellent way to transfer files between a laptop and a desktop. -------------------------------- END OF SMALL PROGRAMS DISK #1941 -------------------------------- A Dialer Lee, Charles $5 #1869 will make just about any telecommunications package PC Pursuit capable. The features include built in intelligence to handle the myriad of strange stuff that happens sometimes while using PC Pursuit, tracking of connect time, a usage log, DESQview-awareness, passwords, linked scripts and more. BackGround File Transfer Dirac Systems $30 #2569 is a comm program that lets you run other programs while you transfer files in the background. It supports Xmodem-CRC and Ymodem-Batch. A background dialer and many other features are included. It also works well with multitasking systems like DESQview, particularly on computers with limited memory. The program is limited to transfer of 360k files, max. A Windows 3 program is also included that allows Windows users to monitor the progress of transfers. BiModem Erik Labs $25 #2257 allows simultaneous bidirectional file transfers. In other words you can upload while downloading at the same time. You also have the ability to chat while the transfer is going on. It is both Double DOS and DESQview aware. File-level password protection is available. Blue Wave Offline Mail Reader 2.1 Cutting Edge Computing $25 #4980 is an off-line Email management system. The program allows you to retrieve mail from a BBS system, read and reply to the messages off-line, save messages to disk, print messages, and search for a specific message. A speech compatibility mode is provided for the blind and visually impaired. Caller ID Look-Up System Online Resources $20 #4545 helps people with Caller-ID service identify who is calling. Reports are developed by telephone number in numeric order. On-line look-up by phone number or last name is provided. CBX-parallink TAU Systems Corporation $85 #4072 allows remote and joint control of a host PC, as well as file transfers. It is great for people who carry laptops when traveling and have another computer that stays behind, or for those with a computer at home and need to do work on a computer at the office. Features include point and shoot menus, hands-off host service, self building dial directory, automatic file transfer overwrite prevention, self learning macros, error checked screen and key data transfer, error checking file transfer protocols, modem status checking, data link status monitoring, transparent data compression for file transfers, proprietary compression technique, remote screen transfer data compression, password access control, encrypted password storage, remote control permission assignment, directory access control list for each user, up to 512 SYSOP defined user access permission profiles, automatic communication log, public domain file transfer protocols, hooks to external protocols, terminal mode, ANSI terminal emulation, and support for add-on terminal emulations. Requires 512K. (The author can no longer be reached at the address provided in the documentation.) Communique 2.0 Blake, Adam $38 #4981 (10-93 CD) is a computer terminal package. Features include support for IEMSI, Avatar, TTY/ANSI/VT52/VT102/AVATAR terminals, ANSI-music standard, XModem/XModem 1k/Xmodem 1kG/YModem/YModem G/ZModem protocols, Zmodem auto-download, and more. DataScope Paladin Software, Inc. ASP $197 #3909 is a serial communications debugger and protocol analyzer. It will do passive bi-directional monitoring and interactive testing and control. It can capture up to 8 megs of data and signal information. It supports baud rates of up to 115k. Telix 3.2 Sampaleanu, Colin $39 #20095/770 [3 disks] is a powerful and fast communications program. It has scripting and most of the other features the other top programs provide. It offers session logging, DOS access and scroll-back of previous screens, among other features. Protocols supported include Xmodem, Kermit, Telink, Ascii, Ymodem, Ymodem Batch, Modem7 and SEAlink. Telix has a split-screen chat mode and a Host mode. It allows multiple dialing directories, has a 64k backsroll screen buffer, a usage log, baud rates to 115,200, a DoorWay mode, a graphical file transfer display, and DESQview support. Boyan Boyan, Justin $40-$60 #27150/0809 is a top-rated, high-performance communications program with an excellent, friendly, user interface. It supports all modems, scripts, and external protocols. It supports interrupt-driven communications with all serial ports and modems, at speeds from 300 to 38,400 baud. Both hardware and software flow control are supported for high-speed modems and networking. Emulates popular terminals, including VT-100, VT-52, and ANSI-BBS. An extensive macro language with well over 200 commands and variables to automate all your communications is available. Passwords can be implemented for each entry of the dialing directory, and you can cut and paste between directories and sort by last connection date. A Host Mode allows you to dial in to your computer from a remote system, read and write messages, send and receive files, and Shell to DOS. This mode can handle passwords for up to 70 different users, supports word-wrap during message entry, and provides a handy Sysop Menu. Since the Host Mode is written as a BOYAN script, it is completely customizable. PowerNode I The Bytebrothers $10 #27150/2333 is designed to make it easier to use external protocols in almost any comm program. Kermit 3.13 Trustees of Columbia University $0 #27150/0036 (10-93 CD) is a powerful and popular program for communication between mainframes and PCs. Included are many official patches along with files that will allow keyboard mapping for the CRISP and GNU EMACS editors, and for UNIX WordPerfect. Other features include support for Cyrillic character sets during file transfer; automatic parity detection during file transfer; support for full-duplex RTS/CTS flow control; user-settable serial port address and IRQ line; many script programming functions and variables; network support; text and graphics terminal emulation; printer control; TCP/IP support; plain text dialing directory; VT220 emulation; MCGA support; direct support for Novell ODI board drivers; a Telnet server mode; and more. The MASM source code is available as MegaDisk set #27493/3269 [2 disks]. Com-And 2.92 [COM_AND] Caber Software ASP $50 #27143/1130 [2 disks] (10-93 CD) is something different - a full-powered communications program that has accessory applications to be used with it, including a visual conferencing program, and telecom bridge and chess programs, complete with playing boards. Commo 5.5 Brucker, Fred P. $53 #27143/2330 (10-93 CD) is a general purpose telecommunications program. It is small and fast, yet contains all the features most people need. Commo is "DESQview aware." It will run in a small window in the foreground or background with no appreciable speed degradation. It will run on systems with limited memory. Commo's Macro Processor allows you to run any program or batch file from Commo at the touch of a key. Other features include a Macro Programming capability that lets you automate many activities; a Doorway Mode; a dialing directory; an internal editor; auto-switching keyboard support for VT102 users; DoubleDOS support; internal scrollback; capture modes; an internal Xmodem; menus for uploading and downloading; send and receive Translate Tables; serial port display control; and more. You can include variables with each Dialing Directory entry, and menu items can speak if you have a Speech Friendly Interface. Setup File and Macro File support is available for the new HS/Link protocol, including bi-directional transfers. COMMO9 for the HP 95LX is also included. COMX Sholl, Samuel A. $60 #27143/3723 is a sophisticated communications program. It offers terminal emulation, file transfer capabilities, a host-mode and an extensive script language. Other features include support for a windowing environment such as DESQview and Windows 3.0; nine transfer protocols; command line script file execution; key-macros; the ability to access up to 15 COM ports at once or individually; network support; script tracer; file compressor and more. GT Powercomm 17.06 P & M Software Co. $70 #27144/044 [3 disks] is a very powerful communications program, at least as good as any available. It's answer mode is so fully-featured that some people use it as a BBS system. Other features include a status line that shows when a script is executing; a two-color chat mode; a dialing directory that can be sorted by comment fields; CD-ROM support; support for COM1 through COM8 and IRQs 0 through 15; EGA/VGA 43/50 line mode support; multi- language support; programmable questionnaires; and much more. There is support for up to 15 different protocols, keyboard substitutions, support for the F11 and F12 keys, and VT-52 emulation. Sysop Tools 2.0b is also included in this set. GT-SCR2 Huffman, John $? #27144/0824 is a set of script files and a directory file of 800 PC Pursuit numbers for use with GT Powercomm 12. HS/Link 1.2 Smith, Samuel H. $20-$28 #4982 is a high speed bi-directional file transfer protocol. It features full streaming error correction, batch file transfers, aborted file crash recovery, and a full screen status display. Other features include a mini terminal mode, on-line chat mode, and support for fossil drivers. Modem Doctor 5.2s [MODEMDOC] 09-93 Volpe, Hank $20 #4234 is a professional diagnostic tool for testing modem and serial ports. All modem lines, IRQ assignments, and base port addresses are checked. It also checks UART chip and all modem registers. NAPLPS Kurashima, Akihisa $0 #2130 is a videotex system which can be used to convert a text file composed of graphics commands into a very compact binary file which can be sent over a telephone line or packet radio to another computer where the NAPLPS binary file is decoded into a NAPLPS graphics image on another monitor. The principal advantages of NAPLPS are very small size of NAPLPS picture files and its easy adaptability to a wide variety of graphics standards. Several programs for making, transferring and decoding NAPLPS files are included. PibTerm Burns, Phil $0 #27145/0046 [2 disks] is a "freeware" communications and terminal emulation program. It offers mouse support, COM3/4 support, script capabilities and support for CompuServe QuickB protocol. PibTerm Source Burns, Phil $0 #27145/0536 [3 disks] the complete Turbo Pascal source code for PibTerm. Robin McQuay Technologies $10-$15 #3724 makes Prodigy easier for beginners and faster and more productive for advanced users. It can upload text files, reroute printer dumps to a text file, play back keystrokes via a script language and more.
